First time on the road

Beitrag von David Rives »

Hi everyone!
It was the first time on the road, at least for me and my GT together. My first impressions are that it has very good acceleration, especially for a four cylinder (although the engine's freshly rebuilt, so I'm taking it easy). The ride is reasonably smooth (I still have to find someone who can install the new shock absorbers I got). The handlingis good, but the steering can be a bit hard and with a little too much understeer, but I figure I need to replace all those tie rods and linkages up front. All in all, it seems like a great sports car so I'm having a lot of fun finally driving it around town. :D

There are two problems however: :?

1. After about a half hour of driving, my brake master cylinder gets very hot. Too hot to touch. And then the brake lights stay on, even when my foot's off the brake pedal. The heat shield directly under the master cylinder is in place. Should there be any other heat shields around the exhaust manifold or pipe? I don't see any others.

2. When the ignition is on, the generator light stays on bright red. I just had the generator completely rebuilt and this didn't change the problem. The fan belt is new and the regulator looks like it is new. Could there be something wrong in the warning lamp circuit?

Thanks, and especially thanks to Uwe, Helmut, Rolf, Alois, Axel, Wolfgang, and the others who sent me parts across the ocean and gave me advice. I wouldn't have made it this far without your help.

When you have mounted the original DC-generator, this is a short check of the generator:

1.) remove the belt to the generator.
2.) connector D must be connected to Ground (always)
3.) remove the wires from D+ and DF
4.) connect D+ to the battery +
5.) connecting DF with grond, the generator should work as "motor" and rotate in the correct direction, same as driven by the belt.

That´s a primitve check to test the function of the original DC-generator.
In case is does not turn, check carbons and collector. If this seems to be ok, the generator must be repaired.

Tin case the test above is ok, check the cables D+ and DF from Generator to the regulator.

When all else fails, you need a new regulator or a Bosch-Sevice with basic knowledges how to adjust a DC-regulator.

In case the DC-Generator is replaced by a AC-Generator, you need a new generator.

regards
Wolfgang
